Opinions on the Health Tech and digital landscape
We asked some high growth health and fitness Technology start-ups a for their opinions related to the digital and tech landscape. We are going to share their insights with you regularly on this blog, kicking off with Ethan Houston from Watshout, a sports tracking app.
Here are their opinions:
-
What programming languages do you see becoming popular by 2020?
I see Python only becoming more and more common. Although Java is currently the most-used language (to my knowledge), Python’s ease of use and weak-typing make it very attractive to newcomers which is what I believe is only going to make it’s popularity increase. Strongly-typed languages like Java definitely have their place but I think they are more useful once developers have already become acquainted with basic development concepts.

What Digital trends do you see becoming even more popular by 2020?
It’s pretty clear to see that Machine Learning and AI are all the rage right now. Some of this may seem like fluff and hype, however these technologies are strong solutions to very real problems. It is important however to note that these technologies aren’t the be-all-end-all, they have their flaws just like everything else. I believe digital security is only going to become more and more important in the coming years as some people have their whole lives documented on the internet.

What do successful developers all have in common?
From my experience hiring and conducting interviews and having to select applicants, I believe that strong developers can be identified from the amount of passion they exude. You can have the best-educated developer in the world, but if they aren’t passionate about what they’re working on then you aren’t reaching their full potential. This passion can be easily seen from a developer’s GitHub, in my opinion. If a developer likes to code in their free time, that is a strong indicator that they are a successful developer.

We asked Nasario Mejia CEO at Vint his opinions. Vint helps fitness providers grow their business by creating a strong community amongst its members directly in their management software. We believe the biggest problem in the fitness industry is member churn, and the huge barrier people have to get started. Many people are intimidated by the thought of joining a fitness class or studio. Vint is a management software that does more than handle your schedule, bookings, payment and CRM. We work with Artificial Intelligence bot communication, photos, social triggers, direct messaging and more to make sure your clients feel safe, entertained and part of something more than just a workout.
Here are Nasario’s opinions:

What programming languages do you see becoming popular by 2020?
My predictions would be Python, Java and Ruby because of its simplicity to learn. Of course, others will still be around but machine learning has also made others popular.

What Digital trends do you see becoming even more popular by 2020?
Digital marketing straight to the mobile. Consumer buying behaviors have changed drastically in the last 5 years. Most people are now beginning to make not only daily buying decisions but also important larger purchases.
Consumer purchasing eventually will be mobile only. This ties into number 1. If all messaging is coming straight to the mobile, then the majority of purchases will as well. Things such as flights, hotels, housing, food, electronics etc.
Experience will go digital. You are starting to see this transformation in the health, wellness and fitness industry and the usage of Virtual Reality

What do successful developers all have in common?
Attention to detail – they take pride in their work and understand that part of being thorough is also maintaining a high level of focus on the details. Doing projects right the first time ultimately save time and money in the long-term.
Keep their skills sharp. The best developers are the individuals who are constantly challenging themselves to learn more. Due to that, many continue their education in the form of seminars, web research, and workshops.
Have an open mind. They understand that there are many ways to accomplish a task and that being humble enough to understand this will ultimately lead to more collaboration.
